The History of Rickrolling, the Rickroll, the unofficial history of rick roll

There are many stories about the Rick Roll, (Rickroll) – they are all based around videos of the 1980’s popstar Rick Astley singing the song “Never Gonna Give you up”. To be rickroll’d in essence is to be shown this video in the space of what you were expecting to see. E.g. To rickroll someone you would provide them with a link (URL) via instant messaging (msn, pidgun, aim etc.), email or other means that they would assume to be something of some interest to them or indeed something with little “bad” content. When clicked/visited this url would in fact show Rick Astley Singing the 1980’s Never going to give you up and you would have been rick-rolled.

Variations on a theme:

As well as the standard, Uno noxious video of rick astley, (often simply an embedded youtube video such as:)

There have been many variations to the “rickroll”. Including javascript based scripts/pages that show you this video while constantly resizing/repositioning the browser window so as it is difficult to shut/turn off the rick astley singing, full screen rickrolls which take control of the whole user’s screen showing the classic singing video and more recently even plugins for browsers that allow a user to be constantly rickrolled (Eternal Rickroll @ W-Shadow - this firefox plugin switchs any video embedded in any web page accessed via the browser with the classic rick-astly video – effectively infinitely rickrolling the victim!)

As well as these there have been numerous offshoots combining the different type of rickrolls, including pages that say “HaHa you can’t get out of this rickroll” and “You have officially been rickrolld” etc.

RickRoll's in the media/online

Its likely a ton of celebrities have been rick rolled but we dont have footage of celeb's being rick-rolled - especially not like how this following video explains a rick roll:

Published definition: Rickrolling is an Internet meme involving the music video for the 1987 Rick Astley song "Never Gonna Give You Up". The meme is a bait and switch: a person provides a Web link they claim is relevant to the topic at hand, but the link actually takes the user to the Astley video. The URL can be masked or obfuscated in some manner so that the user cannot determine the true source of the link without clicking (and thus satisfying their curiosity). When a person clicks on the link given and is led to the web page he/she is said to have been "Rickrolled". By extension, it can also mean playing the song loudly in public in order to be disruptive.

Continuation/Evolution of the Rickroll:

  • Meatspin – A vastly cruder take on the rick roll which sees a video of a man rotating his genitals in a circular motion, often combined with the resizing/moving of windows using javascript to make it difficult to navigate away from/close.
